Quick & Easy: VHS Capture (Windows)

Method #1

  • Install Virtualdub with lagarith
  • choco install virtualdub lagarith ffmpeg
  • Open VirtualDub
  • Open capture AVI
  • Set Video compression to lagarith and audio to PCM
  • Capture

now you should have a good file to edit

pro tip:
losslessly remux into mkv and flac to save space and make it easier to open in the future
ffmpeg -c:v copy -c:a flac remuxedcapture.mkv -i captured.avi

  • choco install ffmpeg
  • ffmpeg -list_devices true -f dshow -i dummy
  • ffmpeg -list_options true -f dshow -i video="Hauppauge Cx23100 Video Capture"
  • ffplay -f dshow -i video="Hauppauge Cx23100 Video Capture":audio="Analog Audio In (Hauppauge USB-Live2)" (test if it works)
  • ffmpeg -f dshow -i video="Hauppauge Cx23100 Video Capture":audio="Analog Audio In (Hauppauge USB-Live2)" -c:v huffyuv -c:a flac out.mkv
